Divorce is an emotional process. It only makes matters worse that there are so many myths and common misconceptions floating around making it difficult to get a full, clear picture of what to expect. Today, we’re busting a few of the most prevalent divorce myths to help our clients face this process with more realistic expectations.
1. Fathers barely ever get custody of their children.
This myth stems from a less modern time when men were expected to be breadwinners while women were expected to only work in the domain of the home and children. Now, more people understand that gender does not dictate how strong the bond between a parent and child is, or how much involvement with the child the parent has. If you are a father getting divorced, don’t feel hopeless about your custody prospects. If you can prove that you are involved in your children’s lives and that it would be in your children’s best interest to stay with you, you have a fighting chance at winning custody.
2. Divorces are always acrimonious.
Just because you don’t want to be married anymore doesn’t mean you hate each other. More often than you would think, couples go through the divorce process with very little bitterness. If a divorce is uncontested, it means that the couple was able to decide the terms of their divorce without negotiating in court. It doesn’t always have to be a big battle.
3. Divorces are always expensive.
Divorce can sometimes be quite affordable, especially when you can manage to decide things on your own and not spend time in court. If you remember at all times that the more complicated a divorce becomes, the more it will cost, and work with your spouse to stay simple, it can make it easier to mitigate expenses. Keep in mind: If divorce were that expensive, it wouldn’t happen so often.
