Take a deep breath: you made it through the holidays. There might have been times where you thought they would never end, but they did. It is a new year, and it is a new start for all of us. If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired – then it is time to get out of that house.
Being stuck together inside a house during the pandemic, many couples have found themselves in constant conflict. A huge amount of people spent the bulk of last year living and working inside the same house, leaving it only to get essential supplies. It brought out the worst in some people, and showed others that they were never meant to be together. With no immediate end in sight, the best option isn’t just to sit around and deal with it. The time to take action is now.
What steps can you actually take to prepare for a divorce in the middle of being trapped inside a house with a spouse you can’t stand during a national pandemic? More steps than you think, actually. Here are our five starting points:
Contact a Lawyer. This isn’t tooting our own horn – it should always be your first step when you’re ready for divorce. A good lawyer will walk you through what the process will look like and help tailor it to you. At The Grey Legal Group, we have decades of combined experience working on divorce cases. We want to get to know you personally and help you towards a better future.
Collect Documents. Copies of any legal and financial documents you have will be very helpful in the divorce process. These include things like your Driver’s License, Social Security card, paystubs, bank statements, and tax returns. Compiling these documents and making copies of new ones will help speed everything along.
Save Up Money. Divorce is an expensive process, and no matter how amicably the process goes, you will end up living on less money than you used to. The holidays are a hard time to save up, but here in the new year try to make some financial preparations both big and small. You can even make them on the fly whenever you go out to the grocery store by leaving the Oreos behind!
Figure Out Your Living Situation. You don’t have to stay in the same house, or the same bed, to stay safe during the pandemic. We know this gets complicated by children, but it’s best to figure out at least a temporary new living situation as the process begins. Don’t put yourself through more than you have to!
Get a Divorce! This might sound self-explanatory – but it is important to remember that you can still get a divorce right now! It might look a little bit different than it used to, but the courts are still functioning and so are lawyers. A divorce doesn’t happen overnight, but it happens quicker the sooner you start it.
If you’ve been trapped in your own home and relationship, it is time for a new start. Contact The Grey Legal Group with all of your family law needs today. We are ready to meet you and help you reach your goals. The law isn’t black and white. It’s time to see a new shade of life!
